Heavy Traffic Class 3 Licence

Class 3 is the medium combination vehicle licence.

It is possible to sit the Heavy Traffic Class 5 Licence and have the Heavy Traffic Class 3 Licence awarded to you once you pass the Class 5.

The Class 3 Licence can be a one-day course if you have evidence of good logbook skills and done Unit Standard 24089 previously. Otherwise, it is a two-day Course.

On the two-day course, you will be instructed on the Class 3 and General Road Code for a couple of hours and when you are ready you then head down to the AA or VTNZ to sit the Class 3 Learner Licence.  You will come back and will be trained and work through a workbook on your Logbook and Class 3 Licence, and then you will sit the practical assessment test.

If you are only doing the one-day course, you will do the Class 3 theory and then be taken for a pre assessment drive which can take from 15 minutes to one hour depending on your experience. After that the assessor will take you for a practical drive. Once you have been found competent on the Assessment and Drive, you will be given a Class 3 Licence Certificate to take to the AA or VTNZ.

A holder of a Class 3 Learner or Full licence can drive:

  • a combination vehicle with a gross combination weight (GCW) of more than 12,000kg but less than 25,001kg.

  • all vehicles covered in classes 1 and 2.
